Origin of Phrases - A
Armed to the teeth
Meaning: To be heavily armed. If a person is armed to the teeth, they have lots of weapons.
Example: Don't even think about going into war unless you are armed to the teeth.
Origin: This is a pirate phrase originating in Port Royal Jamaica in the 1600's, when pirates were constantly looking for ships to loot and their guns were very primitive. Having only single shot black powder weapons and cutlesses, they would carry many of these weapons at once to keep up the fight. In addition they carried a knife in their teeth for maximum arms capability.
